Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 may sell with thicker and less bright screen in some markets

Aside from relaunching the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in a thinner shell, during CTIA in March Samsung has also officially unveiled the Galaxy Tab 8.9, the smaller Android Honeycomb-powered tablet in Sammy's portfolio.

However, since then we've heard many, many things about the bigger Galaxy Tab 10.1, but not much about the Galaxy Tab 8.9. Apparently that may have something to do with some problems that Samsung is facing with this particular tablet's production. Samsung was going to use very thin touchscreens (one layer thinner than usual), however it's been facing very low yields on production of those thin, G1F touchscreens.

So, not wanting to delay the Galaxy Tab 8.9′s release any further, Samsung has contracted two additional manufacturers to make thicker, ‘normal' GFF panels for the tablet, which are about 30-40% fatter than their slim cousins. But that's not all. Because of the additional layer that these screens have, they're also dimmer, which is a real pity.

What will probably end up happening is that Samsung will sell two versions of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 if all this is true. One version will have the thinner and brighter screen, and the other will have the thicker and dimmer one. It's not like this hasn't been done, even by Samsung, before. Just think that the Google Nexus S has a version with a Super AMOLED touchscreen, and one with a Super LCD panel.

And if it takes a move from its Nexus S playbook, Samsung will sell one version in some countries, and the other version in (you guessed it) other countries. The US will clearly get the slim model, as it would be a great marketing problem for Samsung if it doesn't. As for other territories, we're probably going to know reasonably soon.
