Samsung loses appeal to lift Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales ban

Samsung loses appeal to lift Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales ban

A judge with the United States District Court for Northern California has rejected Samsung's appeal to a lift a sales ban of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, Reuters reported. The rulings is the third and latest legal setback to hit the South Korean manufacturer over the past week. “Samsung is disappointed with the court's decision that denied our motion to stay,” the company said in a statement. “We believe today's ruling will ultimately reduce the availability of superior technological features to consumers in the United States.” U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh on Friday also banned sales of Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone; the move reportedly enraged Google, which then rushed to its partner's aid.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 GT-P6800 getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich now?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 GT-P6800 getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich now?
As reported not long ago, Samsung plans to upgrade many of its Galaxy tablets to Android 4.0 ICS starting this month. It looks like the first to get the update is the Galaxy Tab 7.7 GT-P6800.

According to SamMobile, owners of the Tab 7.7 GT-P6800 are getting ICS (via Samsung Kies) as of yesterday, July 3. This, however, seems to happen only in Austria for now.

In case you don't know yet, the GT-P6800 is the 3G version of the Galaxy Tab 7.7. There's also a Wi-Fi-only version (GT-P6810), and an LTE one (i815 - sold in the US by Verizon). These will probably taste ICS pretty soon, too.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Tab 2 7.0 officially priced for the US, release dates unveiled

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Tab 2 7.0 officially priced for the US, release dates unveiled
Samsung has officially announced that it would bring its new Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Tab 2 7.0 to the US market, in partnership with various retailers (including Best Buy, Amazon, and Tiger Direct).

The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (pictured below) will be launched on April 22 for $249.99 - a surprisingly low price for an Android 4.0 ICS tablet with a dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. Also running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the larger Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will cost as low as $399.99 (8GB version) , and is expected to hit the US starting May 13.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″ Unboxing

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″ Unboxing
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″ has landed in the office, and we are now working on the full review, but in the meantime, here is a photo gallery to show what the device looks like, fresh out of the box. When we played with the Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1 and 7.0) at Mobile World Congress, it was clear that the suffix “2″ wasn't meant as a technological leap. Instead, Samsung has worked on improving the user experience and making the tablets for affordable to all.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″ is a good example: after looking at how people use their tablets (from the couch), the company has decided to integrate an Infra-Red module that can turn it into a universal remote control. They have also pre-loaded Peel, which is a great remote control software for Android. It also comes with the latest Android 4.0.

In terms of design, it is a hair thicker than the higher-end 7″ tablet with the AMOLED display, but I suspect that most people won't notice. The screen resolution is only 1024×600, which is the most noticeable difference with high-end products, along with the 8GB of internal storage (there's an empty microSD slot too).

However, with a price of $250, this is a real contender for the casual users, and frankly, I don't see any reason to buy the Kindle Fire which is inferior in just about every way. This tablet will be available on April 22. Stay tuned for the review!

Samsung Espresso 10 and Espresso 7 tablets coming in June?

Samsung Espresso 10 and Espresso 7 tablets coming in June?
Samsung has a lot of tablets on the market right now (or coming soon). The Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Note 10.1… and let's not forget the versions with different built-in connectivity of the aforementioned products.

Those are a lot of SKUs. But apparently they may not be enough for the Korean company. Samsung could be prepping to introduce two more tablets in June. They will both run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and will apparently launch alongside the Galaxy Note 10.1 (since last we heard, that's been delayed until June).

At least that's what the image above says. This apparently is an internal Samsung document outlining the company's new Smart TV range. Samsung's Smart View Android app connects your mobile device to your Samsung TV, and in the box regarding it, we can see that two new tablets are mentioned: the Espresso 10 and the Espresso 7.

The Espresso 10 is due to launch in June, and the Espresso 7′s release time frame is currently TBD. As you'd expect with a leak coming from such an unusual place, there are unfortunately no more details about these tablets at this time.

One could, however, speculate that they'll be sporting the quad-core Exynos processor that Samsung is currently working on (and which may also show up in the upcoming Galaxy S III smartphone), and probably a Full HD (1920×1200) resolution touchscreen for the Espresso 10. Wishing for it to be a Super AMOLED panel is probably taking things too far right now, but the Espresso 7 could get an AMOLED 1280×800 touchscreen. If these things do happen (and that's a big if), Samsung will get closer to Apple in the new PPI (pixels per inch) race.

But it's all speculation at the moment. Also keep in mind that the image above could easily be a fake. That said, Samsung pretty much has to launch some fresh high-end tablets (especially a 10-incher), since its current offerings aren't the cream of the crop, hardware-wise, anymore. The Galaxy Note 10.1 may get a new processor while it's being delayed, but some people will still be turned off by that stylus. Furthermore, because of the wealth of stylus-specific premium bundled software on that tablet, the price is likely to be a tad steeper than what we're used to seeing in the Android world. So Samsung may need another 10″ device to be its ‘mainstream' PPI-leading tablet for the remainder of this year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 delayed for revisions

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 delayed for revisions

While we may finally have pricing and release dates for a majority of Samsung's updated Galaxy line of music players and tablets, launch details for the Galaxy Note 10.1 that debuted at Mobile World Congress in February has remained a mystery. A company spokesperson told The Verge on Wednesday that Samsung has no release date to announce for the device yet, but the slate that was revealed in February may not match the final product that will will ship to end users. The “original” Galaxy Note 10.1 featured a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800-pixel display and was equipped with a dual-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.4GHz, 1GB of RAM and a 3-megapixel rear camera. Earlier rumors have suggested that Samsung may upgrade the slate to a quad-core Exynos 4412 processor clocked at 1.5GHz.

Samsung Espresso 10 and Espresso 7 tablets arriving this June

Samsung Espresso 10 and Espresso 7 tablets arriving this June
Yes, we have heard plenty about the two models of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 which are touted for an April and May launch (while unboxing the Galaxy Tab 2 7″ model already), but here is more news on yet another two tablets from the South Korean conglomerate – the Samsung Espresso 10 and Samsung Espresso 7. This bit of news will certainly jolt you like a shot of caffeine, and it seems that both Espresso tablets will be released this coming June. They will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box, and apart from that, we do not know anything else apart from the speculative bits which can be read after the jump.

For starters, word on the street has it that both Espresso devices will feature the quad-core Exynos processor that Samsung is currently developing, and will most probably boast of a Full HD (1920x1200) resolution touchscreen display for the larger Espresso 10, while the Espresso 7 might end up with an AMOLED 1280x800 resolution touchscreen display. Either way, it would clearly place Samsung within touching distance of Apple's new iPad in the PPI (pixels per inch) race.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE gets teardown, gives literal best viewing angles

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE gets teardown, gives literal best viewing angles
We have waxed lyrical about the Galaxy Tab 7.7's Super AMOLED Plus delights - twice. Color us not entirely shocked, then, to see that Samsung's proudly tore apart the Korean LTE variant for component-obsessed fans. Some Korea-only features include a DMB TV antenna just below the 1280 x 800 display, while a magnesium cover above that keeps the thickness and weight down. Conversely, however, the border of the rear cover was increased by 0.1mm to defend the touchpanel against scratches and ensure that the rear camera doesn't stick out too much.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Tab 2 7.0 to be launched in late April

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Tab 2 7.0 to be launched in late April
The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 were announced by Samsung in February, when the company said both devices would be available starting March, running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Unfortunately for those who've been waiting for them, the tablets have not been released yet.

Now, ComputerWorld is reporting that Samsung had to delay the launch of the new tablets to late April. According to a Samsung spokesman, "Samsung and Google need some more time to work on Android Ice Cream Sandwich", and that's why the devices aren't available. We have no other details on this for now, but it's likely that Samsung has some problems integrating its tablet-specific TouchWiz UX UI with ICS.

Samsung will introduce the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (pictured above) in the UK first. After that – probably meaning in May – the tablets will be released in more markets around the world. For the moment, there's no word on how much the new Tabs will cost.

Samsung delays Galaxy Tab 2 launch until end of April

Samsung delays Galaxy Tab 2 launch until end of April

Samsung on Tuesday confirmed that its 7-inch and 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 2 tablets have been delayed and will now start shipping to the U.K at the end of the month, ComputerWorld reports. When the Android 4.0 slates were announced at this year's Mobile World Congress, the company said both devices would arrive in U.K. stores in March ahead of a global rollout. According to a Samsung spokesman, complications with Ice Cream Sandwich caused the delay is due to Ice Cream Sandwich, which both Samsung and Google need more time to work on. This isn't the first time Samsung has run into problems with Android 4.0. Last month the manufacturer delayed its original upgrade plan for the Galaxy Note from the first three months of 2012 to some time in the second quarter. Samsung is currently rolling out an update to its Galaxy S II smartphone throughout Europe.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 hands-on

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 hands-on

Somehow making the original Galaxy Note look positively diminutive in size, the newly announced Galaxy Note 10.1 is a proper 10.1-inch tablet from Samsung. Sporting a 1.4Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, HSPA+, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.1, the only thing you won't be able to do with this slate is place an actual call. Then again, given how ridiculous the original Note looks held up to the side of a human head, we're not so sure this is a bad thing. In use, the Note 10.1 is snappy and responsive, and the S-pen implementation is well executed. Does the world need another 10-inch tablet? We can't answer that one way or the other, but Samsung certainly has a competent device on its hands.

Samsung announces Galaxy Note 10.1 with Android 4.0, dual-core chipset and S Pen

Samsung announces Galaxy Note 10.1 with Android 4.0, dual-core chipset and S Pen

Samsung on Monday took the wraps off another new addition to its Android tablet lineup, the Galaxy Note 10.1. Like the supersized “phablet” it joins in the Galaxy Note family, the Note 10.1 includes Samsung's S Pen stylus for drawing, note-taking, highlighting and much more. Sadly, this still isn't the high-definition slate we've been waiting for so it looks like Samsung is shooting to launch its Retina-like tablet later this year. The 10-inch Galaxy Note runs Samsung's TouchWiz UI atop Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and includes a 1.4GHz dual-core processor along with the same cameras found in the original Galaxy Tab 10.1. In fact, the Note 10.1 essentially seems like a redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1 with an S Pen and a new processor, which is peculiar since the Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) is pretty much a Galaxy Tab 10.1 as well. Announced alongside the Galaxy Note 10.1 is the Galaxy S WiFi 4.2, a Wi-Fi-only device aimed at gaming. Samsung's press releases follow below.

MWC 2012: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet now official, we go hands-on

MWC 2012: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet now official, we go hands-on
Despite not having a big bad press event like last year, Samsung is very present at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona these days. And we mean very present. The Korean company has even unveiled a new product for this occasion – the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.

This has been rumored to come, but it didn't feel like it had its place in Samsung's portfolio, especially with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 also announced just yesterday. Yet here it is. As its name implies, the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet basically takes the S Pen technology found in the Samsung Galaxy Note phone and couples it with a 10.1-inch tablet.

The result is all about that stylus. The design of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is very similar to the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, which isn't really all that bad. It's thin, it feels good in the hand (with the exception of the glossy back cover unfortunately), and it will come with all kinds of S Pen features built into the software.

For example, it has “multi-screen functionality” which allows you to have Internet pages, videos or other apps side by side while sketching your ideas. You get some ready-made templates for the S Pen, such as meeting minutes, recipe, cards, diary, and magazine. The Galaxy Note 10.1 comes with Adobe Photoshop Touch and Adobe Ideas preinstalled, and Samsung claims that the tablet version of Photoshop is much more usable with the stylus.

Here are some hands-on pictures with the Galaxy Note 10.1 shot at Samsung's booth here in Barcelona:

For more pictures, just scroll to the end of this post – a full gallery awaits.

If you're interested in the pure tech specs, you won't be disappointed either. There's a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor in there, a 3 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2 MP front-facing camera, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 1 GB of RAM and 16, 32 or 64 GB of integrated storage space further expandable via microSD cards, a 7,000 mAh battery, and 21 Mbps HSPA+ support. It runs Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich and its dimensions are 256.7 x 175.3 x 8.9 mm. It weighs 583 g.

Here's a quick hands-on video with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1:

Judging from its press release, Samsung is aiming this at the education market, at least in part (there's even built-in math formula recognition). It remains to be seen whether the S Pen tech will help tablets really ‘invade' classrooms worldwide, and just how happy children and youngsters will be once they find out they can sketch over anything.

As for the general public, the Galaxy Note 10.1 like the ‘original' Galaxy Note before it has a pretty bumpy road ahead. After all, it took a few years until people got off styluses – and some may still associate a stylus with a bad touchscreen experience, despite the fact that the S Pen is a capacitive stylus. So whether or not it will be successful, the Galaxy Note 10.1 remains an interesting niche offering, and it may get favored by certain professionals who do most of their work on the road (aside from students, of course). Only time will tell.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0N starts shipping in Germany

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0N starts shipping in Germany
Just like the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, the 7.0N addresses the legal “issues” surrounding Samsung's slates. The tiny tablet was unveiled last month and now it's starting to hit shelves in Germany with its lawsuit-circumventing redesign in place. It's a little later than anticipated, but our friends in Deutschland can now pick up the tweaked Tabs starting at €499 for a 16GB WiFi version, while an HSPA+ model will set TouchWiz fans back €569.

New 7 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 with Andorid 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich announced

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

New 7 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 with Andorid 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich announced
Samsung has officially unveiled its seventh Android tablet – the Galaxy Tab 2, which is the first to come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich from day one (and the first in the company's 2012 lineup).

Like the original Galaxy Tab P1000 and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, the Galaxy Tab 2 has a 7 inch display with 1024 x 600 pixels. Measuring 193.7 x 122.4 x 10.5 mm and weighing 344 grams, the new device features:

Samsung says the Galaxy Tab 2 will be available globally starting March (for an unknown price). Most likely, the new tablet is going to be showcased at MWC 2012 later this month - we'll be there to check it out.

Samsung Announces First Tablet with Android 4.0

Samsung Announces First Tablet with Android 4.0

Samsung thinks smaller tablets are the way to go to succeed in the US market, so it is no surprise it unveils the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2, its first tablet powered with Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

Apart from the new OS, nothing much new can be seen with this new tablet. It still sports the same PLS display and 4,000mAh battery like the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, as well as the 3-megapixel back camera and VGA front-faced shooter. What is even more dismaying is the apparent downgrade with its 1GHz dual-core processor, compared to the 1.2GHz of the 7.0 Plus.

Nevertheless, if the Android 4.0 pleases you, we guess this device will be worth the wait once it debuts next month (in United Kingdom).

7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Android 4.0 finally revealed

7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Android 4.0 finally revealed
Samsung will kick off its 2012 tablet lineup with the upcoming launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), an Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich”-powered tablet sporting a 1 GHz dual-core SoC and a 7-inch WSVGA (1024 x 600) PLS TFT screen. The tablet will launch in both Wi-Fi only and 3G/Wi-Fi versions the UK first, followed by additional territories thereafter for an undisclosed price and date.

“Two years ago, Samsung Galaxy Tab began to offer customers more possibilities on the go. Since then, Samsung has actively enhanced our tablet line-up with several tablets in different sizes,” said JK Shin, President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “The new Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) will provide people with delighted multimedia experience and allow efficient communication.”

According to the hardware specs, the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) will feature a rear-facing 3MP fixed-focus camera and a front-facing camera for video calling. Also included will be Bluetooth 3.0, a USB 2.0 port, 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, Wi-Fi Direct, a standard Li-ion 4000mAh battery, an accelerometer, and a digital compass. It will also pack 1 GB of RAM, a microSD card supporting up to 32 GB of extra storage, and internal storage capacities of 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB, depending on your wallet.

In addition to the hardware, the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) will also offer services like the Samsung Hub which combines the company's Readers Hub, Music Hub, Games Hub and Video Hub all under one virtual roof. Also provided will be Samsung's ChatON mobile communication service, AllShare Play content sharing, and Samsung Apps in addition to Google's suite of mobile services.

“Connecting socially has never been easier with Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0)'s built-in powerful communication capabilities,” the company said on Monday. “With the voice call capability, the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) can be used just as easily as a phone, affording users the handy convenience of a second device in case they misplace their primary phone. It also lets users to spontaneously arrange multi-party video calls via Google+ hangouts, as well as engage in group chats or micro-communities to collectively chat or share content.”

North American pricing and actual availability is unknown at this point, so stay tuned.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (US Wi-Fi-only model) is getting a software update

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (US Wi-Fi-only model) is getting a software update
Wi-Fi-only Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 units sold in the United States are now in the process of receiving a minor software update. It comes over-the-air, so your tablet will notify you when it's available to download and install, and you go from there. If you're impatient you can force your tablet to check for the update by going to Settings.

This is not, unfortunately, an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, although that should come at some point too. The update rolling out now is meant to fix a few nagging issues, and it also brings with it the newest version of the Android Market (3.4.4).

The update's build ‘number' is UEKMP, and it fixes email attachment problems, auto-rotation not working properly, Wi-Fi reconnects should also work as intended, you should see less force closes, and power consumption is now improved.

German court upholds ruling against Apple, clears Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N for sale
Apple's legal team has been dealt another blow in Germany, where a court today shot down the company's requests for a preliminary injunction against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N. In a statement issued this morning, the Dusseldorf Regional Court said it found “clear differences” between the 10.1N and Apple's iPad, affirming a preliminary ruling handed down in December, and a similar decision announced in Munich this month. It's certainly not the news that Cupertino wanted to wake up to, but we're also a long way from this drama being over.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 launched in India as Galaxy Tab 680

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 launched in India as Galaxy Tab 680
Samsung has introduced its thinnest Android tablet - the Galaxy Tab 7.7 - in India, where the device is being sold under a different name: Samsung Galaxy Tab 680.

The Galaxy Tab 680 costs 33,600 INR (about $678), and should be available via major Indian retailer as of today.

The new tablet runs Android Honeycomb (upgradeable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich), and features a 7.7 inch Super AMOLED Plus display with 1280 x 800 pixels, 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, HSDPA, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3.2MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, and a 5,100 mAh battery - all in a 7.9mm thin case.
