Microsoft reportedly bars HTC from making Windows 8 tablets

Microsoft reportedly bars HTC from making Windows 8 tablets

HTC is reportedly being shut out of Windows RT development due to lack of experience in the tablet market, according to Bloomberg. The news doesn't bode well for the Taiwanese vendor, which on Wednesday cut its second-quarter revenue projection by 13.3%. Microsoft's decision to lock HTC out of Windows 8 development was due to concerns about the company's tablet sales, or lack thereof; the publication's sources suggest the software giant is worried that HTC may diminish and tarnish the Windows RT experience. HTC engineers were reportedly interested in building a Windows device with a customized home screen, similar to what the company does with its Sense UI on Android. Microsoft refused, however, and will instead work with other vendors that have achieved greater sales. HTC may still release a Windows device in the second round of products expected to launch next year.

HTC Puccini 10″ Android tablet unofficially revealed

Thursday, July 28, 2011

Mobile news site BGR has won itself a stunning exclusive today, managing to give us our first official look at HTC's long-rumoured 10″ Android tablet. Known to the internet as the “HTC Puccini”, the HTC tablet uses a similar stylus to the HTC Flyer, with the device also including an 8megapixel camera.

There's not much we can tell about the internals from the imagery. Here it is:

The leather case is worrying. It suggests to us that HTC is going to price its new tablet rather high for the “business user” market.

AT&T's HTC Puccini Android Honeycomb tablet pictured again

We've seen the unannounced HTC Puccini before, but now it's the first time we get to see officially-looking images, including a shot of the tablet's back.

The new images have appeared over at BGR, and confirm the fact that the Puccini is bound to be released by AT&T sometime soon – maybe at about the same time with the Samsung Galaxy S II.

As you can see below, the new HTC tablet will have a stylus pen (like the HTC Flyer), and a classy leather case (which I guess will come as an accessory). on the back of the Puccini we can see an 8MP camera with flash, and stereo speakers.

FCC Filing Suggests AT&T Launch for HTC Puccini Tablet

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

It's no secret that HTC is prepping a followup to their Flyer tablet released earlier this summer. The device has been floating around under the name Puccini and is expected to be a 10-inch slate running Honeycomb. We are now learning that the tablet could be headed for AT&T thanks to an FCC filing that detailed the new device's GSM 850x1900 and 3G WCDMA 850x1900 radios. But that's child's play compared to the Puccini's AWS radios supporting bands 4 and 17, hardware that seems primed for AT&T's upcoming 4G LTE network.

Other details that can be gleaned from the FCC filing include dual speakers and a lack of a 3D-capable camera setup, hinting that HTC will steer clear of the the third dimension on tablet for the time being.

HTC Puccini tablet pays a visit to the FCC

The HTC Puccini is a tablet that has been rumored for some time already, and it seems as though rumor has now turned into fact – as the Puccini (sounds like some sort of spaghetti which is making me hungry) has arrived at the FCC under the guise of its model name, PG09410. The filings over at the FCC fail to provide curious onlookers with a decent view of the Puccini, apart from the label location that you see above. FCC test reports, however, do point towards the Puccini's slant towards AT&T's LTE network on both 700 and 1700MHz bands, which will more or less turn this into AT&T's first LTE tablet. Of course, this means the Puccini will also play nice with the current 3G (WCDMA bands II and V) network from AT&T. Check out the rumored hardware specifications after the jump.

While exact hardware specifications have yet to be confirmed, speculation is rife that the HTC Puccini will run on a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor, sporting a 10″ display at a decent 1,280 x 800 resolution, with Android 3.0.1 Honeycomb in tow for the optimal tablet experience. Other leaks in the past do point towards an interface which is not too far removed from the HTC Sense which you see on the company's range of smartphones.

Since it has arrived at the FCC, only one thing can be said about the HTC Puccini – it is well on its way, and we could probably see it arrive sooner rather than later. Best to set aside a budget for this puppy if you're interested!

Sprint to Tweak Tablet Data Plans for HTC EVO View 4G Launch

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

The HTC EVO View 4G is nearing launch, and it looks like Sprint wants to update their tablet data plans to welcome the 7-inch slate to the family. Pricing for plans includes 1GB at $20 per month, 3GB for $45, and 5GB for $60. A 10GB plan is $90 per month. Interesting enough, the pricing covers 3G data only. Below 3GB of data won’t net you any 4G action, but with a plan priced at $45 per month or more unlimited 4G data is included. Sprint is also selling the plans at discounted “bundled” prices for existing Sprint customers with current smartphone data plans. Not quite shared data, but at least they’re cutting multi-device users a break.

The plans should kick in around the launch of the View 4G, though an exact date isn’t known.
