Motorola Xoom UK pricing official at £580 for 3G and £480 for WiFi-only

Friday, May 13, 2011

Motorola has now confirmed that the latest round of prices the Carphone Warehouse, PC World and other UK retailers are listing for its Xoom tablet are indeed the officially sanctioned price points for the Honeycomb slate. After being listed at £600 for the 3G model and £500 for the WiFi-only version initially, the 32GB-equipped 10-incher is now mercifully £20 cheaper, at £580 and £480 for each variant. A quick glance at Apple's online store tells us that those levies match up exactly to what a corresponding 32GB version of the iPad 2 will cost you, signaling Motorola's intent to at least be on par in terms of pricing. Stores are still showing the Xoom under a pre-order status for now, but that should be changing swiftly if Motorola wishes to live up to its promise of availability this very week.

Purported Verizon screenshot points to LTE-upgradable 16GB Motorola Xoom

The Motorola Xoom tablet pc might be starting to look a bit pricey compared to some of its new competitors, but it seems that the company may have a solution in the offing. According to a leaked, supposedly authentic Verizon screenshot obtained by Droid Life, Motorola is apparently planning to launch an LTE-upgradable Xoom with just 16GB of storage instead of the current 32GB, which would presumably also open the door for a cheaper 16GB WiFi-only model. Of course, that's still a long way from being official, but cutting the storage in half is certainly one sure way to make a (seemingly necessary) price drop a bit more bearable.

Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi Available Today

Samsung said it’d be here yesterday, and sure enough the Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi (7-inch) is up for sale at several retailers, including Circuit City. As promised before, it’s $350 – a sharp difference from the $600 it debuted at. Even for that cheap a price, though, we can’t say we’re terribly excited for this knowing some tasty Honeycomb options are right around the corner. Head on over to Circuit City now if you’re interesting.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer is Rooted Barely a Day After Release

If anyone could have the new Asus Eee Pay Transformer under submission barely a day after launch, you better believe Paul O'Brien of MoDaCo would be the guy to do it. Freshly shipping from Amazon as of April 10th, the tablet, which will receive a wider release in May, has been cracked with root access granted.

The Transformer is the Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet pc with keyboard dock that at once acts as a portable slate and quasi-netbook. You can check out the user manual recently posted by Asus or grab the source code if that is more your thing. You will have to head over to Twitter and see what Mr. O'Brien has to say if you want the procedure to root the tablet you probably don't own yet.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 arriving in June

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that was unveiled earlier this year finally has a release date and a price. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will arrive in stores on June 8, 2011. The tablets will be priced at $499 for the 16GB WiFi-only version, and $599 for the 32GB WiFi-only version. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 will go on sale later in the year, with a price tag of $469 for the 16GB WiFi-only version, and $569 for the 32GB WiFi-only version. 3G versions of the devices are yet to be known (Samsung is probably working it out with the carriers now). If you're curious about the Galaxy Tab 10.1, you can check out our hands-on preview we had with the device at the MWC 2011.

Motorola Xoom 3G now available in the UK for £199.99 with £25 per month unlimited data contract

Monday, May 9, 2011

The Motorola Xoom tablet pc, the first ever tablet to run Android 3.0 Honeycomb (the first tablet-optimized version of Google's mobile operating system), is already available in the UK, in both 3G and Wi-Fi-only flavors. The 3G-enabled version is an exclusive to Carphone Warehouse. The retailer had started pre-orders for £599.99, but in the meantime dropped the price to the £579.99 it still asks today. That's obviously for an unlocked device that you can use on any network you please.

But if that asking price is too expensive for you, yet you'd still want to get yourself a Xoom, and also plan on extensively using a mobile data connection on it, then Carphone Warehouse may still have something for you. It's now got a new option: you can purchase the tablet for just £199.99 outright, but to do so you have to sign a two-year data contract. That will cost you £25 per month and give you ‘unlimited' data (subject to a fair use policy).

Head on over to Carphone Warehouse right now if this deal sounds good to you. After all, if you were going to buy a data SIM for your tablet anyway, why not choose this option and spend a lot less for the device?

Updated MeeGo interface gets shown off on Atom Z670-based reference tablet

MeeGo on tablet pc? It's still possible. Not only has Netbook News managed to get its hands on a reference tablet based on Intel's brand new Atom Z670 tablet pc processor at IDF Beijing, but one running a new version of MeeGo with a spiffed-up UI. Yes, looks like MeeGo on tablet still has some hope.

As you can see above and in the video after the break, it looks to be a marked improvement over the tablet interface that was just shown off at Mobile World Congress in February, with it offering both a more refined appearance and what appears to be a more intuitive navigation system with improved response.

Will we see any new announcement from Nokia besides 'Anna'?

Gigabyte's pricey S1080 tablet goes on sale in Taiwan

As far as tablets go, Gigabyte's S1080 tablet pc is about as far as you can get from the iPad, with its dual-core Atom N550 processor, 320GB hard drive, and Ethernet port. (And, you know, the fact that it runs Windows 7.) Still, the company is going head to head with Apple's magical slate - it just priced the 10-inch, 3G-enabled tablet at NT$22,900 ($787), a shade higher than the NT$22,800 price of a first-generation iPad with 3G and 64GB of storage. (Taiwan hasn't gotten the iPad 2 yet.) If having a Windows tablet with mouse buttons, of all things, floats your boat, it can't be beat, though finding a cheaper Windows slate should be a cinch.

Motorola XOOM WiFi to be Offered by Telus April 19th

Telus looks to be offering the Motorola XOOM WiFi tablet pc from their own shelves starting April 19th. It'll cost as much as the unit in America does – $599.99. And there really isn't a whole lot to say about it because it's the same device. Telus won't be injecting any 3G radios into this one so there really is no true benefit of buying it through them. Best Buy and other retailers offer it for the same price. Check it out here if you want.

XOOM launches via Amazon – £569 and in stock today

It looks like Motorola's XOOM Android 3.0 tablet pc is about to leak out onto the shop shelves, with the UK wing of Amazon now featuring stock of the tablet for dispatch.

The asking price is £569.99 including shipping, although this is via a third-party retailer rather than Amazon itself – which makes us slightly less confident.

This is rather more than the UK high street price, which seems to be hovering around the £479 mark (thanks, Jimbo). Anyone actually seen/touched/bought a XOOM out in the real world yet?

Neonode's zForce optical touchscreens hitting ASUS tablets later this year

It's been over a year since Neonode coyly said some nameless "Asian companies" would use its multitouch zForce displays in future products. Now one of them, at least, is coming out of the woodwork - ASUS said it plans to ship a "series of products" with these optical touchscreens later this year. What does this mean for consumers? Neonode's screens don't tack any additional layers on top of the touchscreen, making this line of 5 to 13-inch displays different from more common capacitive and resistive ones. The result, Neonode says, is thinner and - one would hope - more responsive screens. No word on when these products will hit (nor how creative ASUS will get with its designs), but feel to dig for details in the terse press release.

Press Release:
Neonode Signs License Agreement with ASUSTeK

STOCKHOLM--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Neonode, Inc. (NEOND.OB), the optical touchscreen technology company, today announced a license agreement with ASUSTeK, the leading Taiwanese computer, communications and consumer electronic company. Neonode and ASUSTeK have agreed to develop a series of products that will include Neonode's zForce® optical touch screen solution. The first products using zForce® are planned to be launched later this year.

"I'm very proud to announce an agreement with a leading global company like ASUSTeK. I firmly believe that the combination of our low cost high-performing touch screen and the outstanding know-how and experience of ASUSTeK will make this a win-win for both ASUSTeK and Neonode"

I firmly believe that the combination of our low cost high-performing touch screen and the outstanding know-how and experience of ASUSTeK will make this a win-win for both ASUSTeK and Neonode," said Thomas Eriksson, CEO of Neonode, Inc.

Toshiba AT300 Android Honeycomb tablet launching in June (in Japan)

Toshiba has officially announced the launch date of its first Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet. The device will be available starting June – although, for the moment, it looks like this is going to happen only in Japan.

The tablet, called Toshiba AT300, has been included in the Regza family of products, which may mean it will be released via NTT DoCoMo (Japan’s largest mobile carrier).

The new Honeycomb tablet – which may or may not be better than Apple’s iPad - features a 10.1 inch display with 1280 x 800 pixels, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, HDMI, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM, dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, and 16GB of on-board memory.

In Japan, the Toshiba Honeycomb tablet pc will cost about 60,000 yen ($725)
