Announced
for the US market under the name of Excite 10, the Toshiba AT200 is now
available in the UK, where Carphone Warehouse has started selling two
versions of it. The British retailer is offering the AT200 16GB for £399 (about $631), and the AT200 32GB for £449 (about $710). A bit pricey, I'd say. Anyway, you can buy the tablets only online (here) for now - but starting February 15 Carphone Warehouse's physical shops will have it, too. At just 7.7mm, the Toshiba AT200 is considered the thinnest tablet in the world. Its features include a 10.1 inch LED-backlit display with 1280 x 800 pixels, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, A-GPS, HDMI, 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor, 1GB of RAM, HDMI, 5MP rear camera with 720p video recording, and a 2MP front-facing camera. Unfortunately, the A200 is running Android 3.2 Honeycomb. But an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be available at some point. In the US, prices for the Toshiba AT200 / Excite 100 will start at $529.99. |

Toshiba waterproof tablet is wirelessly powered
Wednesday, January 18, 2012
![]() | |
At the recently concluded CES 2012, Toshiba paraded a fair number of new gadgets in addition to prototypes – and one of them is this waterproof tablet which can also be powered sans wires. It resided inside an aquarium
most of the time on the showfloor, to show to the world just how its
internal hardware is dammed up against any leaks. Toshiba came about
this tablet by prototyping one based on its “Regza Tablet” that comes
with a 10.1″ LCD display. According to Toshiba, “We prototyped it for
displaying our technologies. We are not planning to commercialize it at
this point.” In order to send power wirelessly, Toshiba used the magnetic resonance method that has a relatively long range of transmission. With the distance between the prototyped tablet computer and a power-transmitting device measuring several centimeters, this allows the tablet to remain juiced while swimming with the proverbial sharks. There was no disclosure on the efficiency of the power transmission, although the efficiency level is not high. |

Toshiba claiming “World's Thinnest” with tablet and ultrabook
Tuesday, January 10, 2012
![]() | |
A Japanese press release distributed by Toshiba (translation) reveals that the company plans to showcase the “world's thinnest and lightest” 10.1-inch tablet and 13.3-inch ultrabook next week during CES 2012. According to reports, Toshiba's 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet will only measure 7.7-mm thick and feature a 1280 x 800 resolution. Other hardware specs will include a 1.2 GHz dual-core TI OMAP4430 SoC, a rear-facing 5MP camera, a front-facing 2MP camera, micro-HDMI output, and storage capacities of 16 and 32 GB. Additional reports claim that Toshiba will also showcase an unnamed 7-inch tablet that will be completely different than the current Thrive model. It will reportedly feature Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a rear camera, microSD and microUSB ports. This one will likely take on Amazon's Kindle Fire, a “budget” tablet packing a dual-core Qualcomm SoC. In fact, this gadget will probably be one of MANY sub-$200 tablets we'll see at CES this year. As for the 13.3-inch Toshiba ultrabook, there's speculation that the company could be referring to the Portege Z855. However in addition to the tablet and ultrabook, Toshiba reports that it will also showcase an 7-inch OLED reference tablet with wireless power charging and a water-resistant construction, and a 55-inch QFHD glasses-free 3D HDTV. |

Toshiba Excite X10 Tablet Unveiled
Monday, January 9, 2012
![]() | |
Toshiba
provides a sneek peak of its latest tablet venture during the CES. The
Excite X10 is touted as the world's thinnest 10-inch tablet, with only
0.3 inch in thickness and only 1.2 pounds in weight. It comes with
Corning Gorilla glass on the front and brushed magnesium alloy at the
back. Underneath the tablet reveals a TI OMAP 4420 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 10-inch screen with 1,280 x 800 resolution, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat, a 5-megapixel shooter at the back, micro USB, mini HDMI out, microSD card slot. As for the OS, the Toshiba Excite X10 will be shipped with Android 3.2 Honeycomb during mid-Q1, but later batches will arrive with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Obviously, it is much more advisable to wait a bit longer for the Ice Cream Sandwich version. The tablet also comes with its a native media player with DLNA compatibility, Toshiba File Manager, Netflix, and QuickOffice. It also has an app that enables users to screen grab, something that other Android devices lack. Pricing remains unclear, but expect it to go premium. We just do not know whether it could compete with iPad 3, which is just around the corner. |

Toshiba to unveil affordable 7-inch tablet and world's thinnest 10-inch tablet at CES
Sunday, January 8, 2012
![]() |
|
Toshiba's tablets never took off like the company wanted, but according to Notebook Italia, Toshiba will soon launch an entry-level 7-inch Android tablet that will debut at next week's Consumer Electronics Show. The black and blue slate features a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 1024 x 600-pixel display, a rear camera, a microUSB port and a microSD slot. A leaked image also reveals three capacitive buttons, leading us to believe it will not be running Android 3.2 Honeycomb or Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. With the recent success of the Kindle Fire, numerous low-priced tablets are slated to appear at this CES and Toshiba's new 7-inch model will be among them. Additionally, according to Toshiba's Japanese website, the company will be showcasing the “world's thinnest and lightest 10.1-inch tablet” at CES next week. Toshiba introduced the AT200 tablet last fall, which measured at just 7.7mm thick, however the company never announced a release date. Read Read |

Toshiba has a Tegra 3 tablet in the works?
Sunday, January 1, 2012
![]() |
|
A new tablet has popped up in the benchmark listings on AnTuTu's website (AnTuTu is a benchmarking app for mobile devices) and this time it belongs to Toshiba. The tablet is listed under the name “Tostab06″ which is similar to the other names that Toshiba has been using for its previous tablets. While it wasn't explicitly stated that the tablet
was running on a Tegra 3 processor, it does list a clock frequency of
1400MHz and its results are comparable to those of the ASUS Transformer
Prime - a Tegra 3-powered tablet, which has led to the speculation that the “Tostab06″ uses the same quad-core processor as well. Other than the benchmark results, there are no additional details about the tablet, so there's not much to say for now, but it sure looks like the Tegra 3 is following in the footsteps of its popular predecessor - the Tegra 2. Expect many more tablets in 2012 to be running on NVIDIA's Tegra 3 SoC. |

Toshiba's Excite Honeycomb tablet confirmed for Canadian launch in January
Saturday, December 10, 2011
We've already heard a fair bit about Toshiba's forthcoming
10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet, but the company has only now finally
confirmed a name — Excite, previously seen in a trademark filing — and a
launch date (or month, anyway) for the tablet outside of Europe. You
can look for it to roll out for an as yet unspecified price sometime in
January — in Canada, at least. It will come in both 16GB and 32GB
versions, each of which pack a 1.2GHz dual-core OMAP 4430 processor, a 2
megapixel front-facing camera, a 5 megapixel cam 'round back, and a
microSD card slot and a micro HDMI port. Toshiba also boasts that it's
the “world's thinnest, lightest tablet,” with it measuring just 7.7 mm
thick and weighing in at 558 grams (or 1.23 pounds).

Toshiba reveals 10-inch tablet just 0.303-inches thick
Friday, October 7, 2011
This week during CEATEC 2011, Toshiba revealed several upcoming products including its 55-inch glasses-free 4K2K 3DTV (originally unveiled during IFA), and an Android-based 10.1-inch tablet measuring just 0.303-inches and weighing around 1.23 lbs. Called the Toshiba Regza AT700, there's no indication of when this gadget will arrive here in the States (if at all), but it's expected to hit Japanese store shelves in mid-December 2011.
The details surrounding the tablet are rather slim, but various sources claim that it will sport a 1.2 GHz OMAP4430 SoC from Texas Instruments, a 2MP front-facing webcam, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a card reader, 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, Bluetooth, a micro-USB port and a micro-HDMI port. Android 3.2 will be the OS of choice, and the multi-touch display will have a default resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.
During the show, Toshiba also revealed the Regza Blu-ray DBR-M190 which packs an insane 5 TB of HDD space. The company claims that the capacity will allow the device to simultaneously record up to six digital channels for 15 days straight set on Standard resolution (non HD but still a lot of Fringe and Supernatural episodes). The device will also have server capabilities that will allow users to stream content on one device, pause the video, and then resume playback on another device.
Unfortunately, the DBR-M190 may not leave Japan. “It's a bit hard to imagine this Regza server as being sold globally,” Masaaki Osumi, head of Toshiba's digital products division, told Pocket-lint. “But on a regional basis, there is a natural need for TVs that have server functionality. So in Europe or some parts of China, we want to create TVs that can act as servers.”
Toshiba also revealed additional details regarding its upcoming (and renamed) Regza 55X3 55-inch glasses-free 3DTV. According to the company, the lenticular 3D mode will be limited to an effective resolution of 1280 x 720, not the TV's default 3840 x 2160 resolution (4K2K). It will also use face-tracking technology to automatically optimize the experience for up to nine simultaneous viewers, depending on where they're sitting. The Regza 55×3 will cost around $10K, and so far there's no set date of when it will ship to the U.S.

Toshiba AT200 tablet hits the FCC
They say that faint heart
never won fair lady, and I suppose the same can be said for device
manufacturers who are wondering whether their wares are good enough for
release in the US – and hence contemplating whether or not to send said
device to the folks over at the FCC in order to gain an approval.
Well, Toshiba certainly has no such qualms with their AT200 tablet that
was first unveiled at IFA 2011 recently, and we're pleased to say that
the FCC has given their collective nods of approval to the AT200.
This 10.1″ device comes in a very slim form factor that is guaranteed to turn heads the moment you whip it out from its protective case, and be careful not to throw out this 7.7mm thin tablet with the rest of your old newspapers during one of those absent-minded spring cleaning moments!
In the process of picking up its FCC approval, we found out that the AT200 will come with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, Android 3.2 Honeycomb and 64GB of internal memory – all pieced together by Quanta, the same Chinese OEM who has Amazon's Kindle Fire and RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook under their customer list.

Toshiba Tablet Stumbles Out of the Gate
Wednesday, July 20, 2011
While the device worked during Wired.com's testing period without issue, numerous customers have experienced problems with Toshiba's new Thrive tablet. Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com
In a series of message board complaints on Monday, customers reported problems waking the tablet from its sleep mode. Instead of normally pressing the power button on the side of the device to turn on the screen, a number of users needed to do hard reboot — or a complete restart of the system software — in order to use the tablet. The complaints from forum members were first reported by Engadget.
“Toshiba is aware a limited number of Thrive Tablet users are experiencing Resume issues when in Sleep mode,” the company declared in a statement issued to Wired.com. ” We are aggressively working to implement a fix that resolves this issue and will push an update as soon as possible.”
It's rough news for Toshiba, as its new tablet product launches in a market packed with Android slate offerings. Beginning in February with the Motorola Xoom, close to a dozen new Android-powered tablets have been released in 2011. Most attacks on Android's tablet-optimized version, Honeycomb, focus on a “not quite finished” quality of the software. Toshiba's issues right out of the gate only exacerbate the beta-like feel of Honeycomb, which may bar customers from picking up a Thrive.
A number of Thrive owners posted their efforts in figuring out a workaround solution to the problem, with varied success. Some fixes included removing the battery and plugging the device into an A/C charger, tweaking the screen power setting so that it won't turn off (a horrible battery drain), and other more complicated workarounds.
But as one forum user states, “for the average consumer, that is a lot of hoop jumping for something that should just work.”
During Wired.com's period of testing of the Thrive tablet, we did not observe any issues with sleep mode.
Toshiba also plans to issue a software update to the tablet with system enhancements, most likely in an effort to distract from the negative attention.
“Toshiba will push an update to enhance the multi-tasking capabilities of the device within the next 48 hours,” the company said in a statement. “As a general practice, Toshiba recommends users download the latest system updates.”
Toshiba has yet to give an ETA on a fix for the Thrive's sleep issues, but customers should expect an over-the-air update soon.

Toshiba Thrive software update arrives
Tuesday, July 12, 2011
Early adopters of the Toshiba Thrive, rejoice! It seems as though the Japanese consumer electronics giant has rolled out the first software update for said tablet – which is fairly recent after the Thrive went officially on sale. Just what does this update entail? You can surely expect the standard bunch of “improvements”, where in the Thrive's case would include better support for multi-touch capability amongst others. Someone from the Android Central forums did report that his Thrive no longer worked as it used to since a generic NVIDIA Tegra driver could not have it connect to his computer via the Android Debug Bridge from Google's software developer tools.
Just to get a better idea of how the Toshiba Thrive stacks up against the rest of the tablet crowd, this device will sport a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, not to mention a rather high resolution 10.1″ 1,280 x 800 pixel display. It also has a removable back panel that enables you to swap the battery, while a USB port and an SD memory card slot is there for expansion purposes. If you own a Thrive, have you gotten your update yet?

Toshiba Thrive 8GB and 16GB On Sale at Newegg
Friday, July 8, 2011
There were moments when we wondered if Toshiba's Android Honeycomb tablet would ever see the light of day, but months after we caught a glimpse of prototype units at CES the slate now known as the Thrive has started showing up for sale at several retailers. We got word some Best Buy locations had units for sale earlier in the week, and it now looks like Newegg has begun selling Toshiba's baby. Toshiba is pushing this thing pretty hard, and from everything we have seen the Thrive won't disappoint those searching for a polished Android 3.0 device at a wallet-friendly price. You can snag the 16GB version for $479.99 or the 8GB model for only $429.99.

Toshiba Thrive now available at Newegg, $429.99 for the 8 GB model, $479.99 for 16 GB
The Toshiba Thrive is the company's first foray into the Android tablet space. The Thrive became finally official in June after many months of leaks, for most of which it didn't even have a name. You've been able to pre-order one for quite a while, and a release was expected around the middle of this month. Yet the Thrive is already being sold by some stores, as we reported a few days ago.
And now it seems that you're able to get a Toshiba Thrive not only in brick-and-mortar stores, but online too. Well known retailer Newegg has put two versions of Toshiba's tablet up for grabs on its website. The difference is only in available storage space.
There's an 8 GB model which retails for $429.99, and a 16 GB version that goes for $479.99. Interestingly enough, Newegg hasn't (yet?) listed the 32 GB Thrive. But if you don't want or need 32 GB of internal storage on your tablet, and have been looking forward to the Thrive's release, perhaps you should head over to Newegg right now and place an order. Free shipping is included by the way.
The Toshiba Thrive has a 10.1-inch 1280×800 capacitive touchscreen, a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 5 MP autofocus rear camera with video recording, a secondary front-facing 2 MP camera for video calls, Wi-Fi 802.11n, GPS, microSD card support, a 3.5 mm headset jack, stereo speakers, and it weighs 771 grams. The Thrive runs Android Honeycomb.

Thursday, June 16, 2011
Toshiba has officially announced that its very first Android 3.1 Honyecomb tablet would be available in Canada starting August.
Now, this tablet is the Thrive that we've seen several times before, but Toshiba Canada doesn't call it like that. It simply refers to it as the Toshiba Tablet. Maybe it plans to re-brand it for the Canadian market, who knows?
Anyway. The tablet - the Toshiba Tablet - features a 10.1 inch screen with 1280 x 800 pixels, "Adaptive Display and Resolution+ video enhancement technologies" for image sharpness and clarity, Wi-Fi, GPS, HDMI, stereo speakers with SRS Labs sound enhancement, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, and a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.
The tablet's prices will be as follows:
Canadian customers will be able to buy the Toshiba Tablet from various retailers, including Best Buy, Future Shop, Walmart and Staples. A series of optional accessories will be available for the tablet, including an HDMI multimedia dock, and a Portfolio 360 case that “features a patent-pending rotating design that enables users to position the tablet at multiple viewing angles in both landscape and portrait modes without removing the tablet from the case.”

Toshiba Thrive pre-order now live, starts at $430 and ends up in your hands in mid-July
Wednesday, June 15, 2011
Finally Toshiba's Honeycomb tablet gets a proper date, and a price! Toshiba is marking June 13th with pre-order availability of its Thrive Android (3.1!) tablet, a device whose life aspiration and name happen to coincide perfectly. This 10-inch Tegra 2 portable has the usual 1280 x 800 resolution, dual cameras (5-Megapixel on the back, 2-Megapixel up front), a gigabyte of RAM, and a 23WHr battery, but it also brings nice expandability with full-size HDMI, USB 2.0 and SD card slots. The Easy Grip back covers can be swapped — which, yes, means you can also replace the battery — though you'll have to splash out $20 for any non-black hues. The 8GB Thrive costs $430, followed by the 16GB unit at $480 and the 32GB option at $580. You can order yours directly from Toshiba or at Amazon, Best Buy or Office Direct, with deliveries slated for mid-July.

Toshiba Thrive pre-order goes live
Tuesday, June 14, 2011
Toshiba has kept to their word, by kicking off today with the pre-order of their very own Thrive tablet device that is powered by the latest Android 3.1 Honeycomb device – definitely something worth looking into, especially since many other tablet manufacturers out there do release tablets that are running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread or Android 3.0 Honeycomb, with future plans of updating the software to the latest version down the road. Back to the Thrive – we are quite confident that the pre-order figures will be encouraging, especially since this 10″ device at 1,280 x 800 resolution will sport the Tegra 2 chipset, a couple of cameras (2-megapixel in front with 5-megapixels at th eback), 1GB RAM, HDMI support, USB 2.0 connectivity, an SD memory card slot, swappable Easy Grip back covers, and a 23WHr battery that ought to last the distance without missing a beat.
Oh yeah, the swappable Easy Grip back covers we mentioned? That also means you can replace the battery when the time to do so arrives. Non-black hues will cost $20 more, where the 8GB Thrive is going for $430 while double the amount of storage space and you have to fork out $480. As for the 32GB model, that will weigh in at $580.
Expect the Thrive to arrive at your doorstep in July.

Toshiba Thrive now official
Friday, June 3, 2011
We have heard a lot of rumors about Toshiba's upcoming Android tablet ever since CES, but today we have found out some concrete details from Toshiba itself.
Toshiba confirmed this morning that the tablet will be called the Thrive and that the pre-ordering will begin next week. The Thrive is priced at $429 for 8GB, $479 for 16GB, $579 for 32GB. That's a pretty solid price for a device that is shipped with Android 3.1, has a Tegra 2 dual-core processor, and features an IPS display. Other attractive features are the full sized HDMI and USB ports and the ability to swap out the back of the tablet and replace it with a color you like.
Toshiba is smart and isn't doing much to change the stock Android experience on the tablet. They are simply adding their Resolution+ brightening technology and a better file manager as well as some third party apps pre-installed including QuickOffice and LogMeIn.
The Thrive will start shipping early July, but Toshiba also mentioned that they would release another Android tablet with a different screen size at some point later in the year. Let us know what you think of the Toshiba Thrive in the comments section below.
