Ubisoft looking to bring Assassin's Creed to tablets

Sunday, July 24, 2011

Tablets and smartphones are a growing market, and while they may not be replacing gaming consoles like the PS3 or Xbox 360 any time soon, they are providing users who do not own portable gaming consoles like the PSP or Nintendo 3DS an alternative gaming platform. Even though the complexity of the gameplay and graphics may not be able to beat dedicated portable gaming consoles, the ever-growing number of tablet and smartphone users presents a huge untapped market that game developers can't help but to explore.

Only yesterday we reported that popular RTS game Battle Realms was planning to make the jump on to iOS and Android devices in 2012, and it appears that Ubisoft has plans to make a similar jump as well. For those unfamiliar with the company, they are behind some of the more popular gaming titles such as Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia.

Nintendo 3DS users are probably aware of the news that Ubisoft cancelled production on Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy last year, who cited reasons such as the number of hardcore games on the 3DS machine was plenty already, which is really not surprising when the company recently announced their plans to bring the Assassin's Creed franchise to the tablet market.

According to Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot:

“The tablet market is growing fast. Apple and a lot of other players are coming with tablets [...] What we are doing on that machine is developing a few products around our brands. You will see games that will come in the next few years from all of our biggest brands, like Assassin's Creed or others.

They will be different games [...] They will be either adapted from other games we created in the past or games developed specifically for those platforms.”

It sounds pretty promising and if you ever needed another reason to get a tablet, it looks like now's as good a time as any.
