Dell To Release a Windows 8 Tablet For End of 2012

With all the attention focused on the iPad, Dell is looking to turn the tides by scheduling a Windows 8 tablet for release later this year.

Dell’s chief commercial officer Steve Felice said that the tablet market was still open and that it is looking to create a tablet that would appeal to everyone from casual users to business users.

“We’re very encouraged by the touch capability we are seeing in the beta versions on Windows 8,” Felice told Reuters in an interview.

Felice said that Dell has a roadmap for tablets that has yet to be released, but that there will be announcements for the back half of the year. He added that Dell’s relationships with thousands of business customers gives it an advantage over Apple, whose gadgets can create havoc for IT departments because it operates on an entirely different system.

That being said, Dell will have a tough battle to face if it decides to face Apple head-on, with Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, reporting that he was "thrilled" with how the new iPad's release weekend went. Dell will have to blow the tablet market away if they want to give Apple a run for its money.

Dell Streak 7 receives Ice Cream Sandwich ROM

Dell might have stopped selling the Streak 7 in the US, but that does not mean there is no more life in this particular tablet. No sir, a community of unofficial developers have come together to conjure a beta build of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, where they borrowed several elements from the Cyanogenmod team. There is a giant disclaimer over here just in case you think that your Streak 7 deserves a resuscitation in case anything goes awry, making sure that this is not for the faint hearted, but for seasoned veterans instead. We do know that this beta build will see Wi-Fi connectivity working on your Streak 7 after installation, including most of the Google apps, audio playback, touchscreen display, rotation sensors, the ability to capture a screenshot, not to mention the capacitive buttons working just fine, alongside USB mount capability an external storage. There are still lag issues involved, and the camera fails to launch, not to mention being unable to take advantage of the built-in Bluetooth connection. And yes, GPS will not function as well, in addition to 3G/4G/GSM radio, so Wi-Fi's all you got at the moment.

Dell to re-enter the tablet market in late 2012, likely with Windows 8

Dell has had trouble in the mobile and tablet space. The company's CEO, Michael Dell, has continuously bashed Android, and its Streak phone-tablet line was a commercial failure that was eventually abandoned. The once-dominant PC corporation has examined the company's shortcomings and now understands that consumers value the “ecosystem” of a tablet as much as the hardware, according to Dell chief commercial officer Steve Felice. “We have been taking our time. The general failure of everyone that's tried to introduce a tablet outside of Apple” said Felice in an interview with Reuters. “You will see us enter this market in a bigger way toward the end of the year. So we are not really deemphasizing it, we are really being very careful how we enter it.” The company hasn't announced which non-Apple operating system it might adopt, saying both Android and Windows 8 were viable options. However, Felice did say that he liked the feel of Microsoft's touch-enabled operating system, which should debut later this year. Dell plans to focus on the consumer level of products rather than the enterprise, although the company's products will remain compatible within the business marketplace. “When we introduce the products, they will be consumer products, but we are going to make sure that they are very compatible with the business marketplace, which we don't think Apple has addressed,” said Felice. “There's lot of use in the commercial sector that requires security and more compatibility, and I think we will be able to address that in a better way.”

Dell Latitude ST tablet gets official with vague press release, dead links

Remember that Latitude ST that Dell gave us a sneak peek at earlier in the week? Well it's slowly inching its way towards an official release, appearing on Dell's Corporate Blog early this morning. The Windows 7-based enterprise tablet is powered by an Intel Atom processor and includes a 10-inch multi-touch display with stylus, WiFi, mobile broadband options, front and rear webcams and a mic. There are also durability features like Gorilla Glass and a rubber bumper, enabling it to survive violent impacts with plush office carpeting. Port details are rather vague in the PR, though USB, HDMI and an SD card reader get their 15 seconds of fame in the promo video. There are also security features, like remote hard drive wipe, Microsoft Bitlocker support (this is a Windows 7 tablet, after all) and a Kensington Lock slot. Pricing details are absent and the product page isn't live quite yet (though that didn't stop Dell from linking to it from the blog post), but it looks like we could see these ship as soon as November 1st. Update: Looks like the specs have leaked out overseas, so we're guessing it'll get official soon enough.

Dell looks to Windows 8 tablet

Windows 7 might be top dog at the moment, but when it comes to Windows 8, there is still very little that we know about it. We do know, however, that Dell is part of the plan where Windows 8 is concerned, especially since the computer company is working on a tablet that will be able to support Windows 8. At this year's Dell World in Texas, Michael Dell mentioned to journalists of his company's plans to work on Windows 8-powered tablets. For those who still have memories of the Android-powered Streak, it seems that Dell worked on that in order to "see customer reaction and behavior." No idea on whether that is just a way of being gracious with their commercial failure (it wasn't all that bad a tablet, really, it is just that the rest of the public never really warmed up to it). Dell's Windows 7 powered ‘Peju' tablet possibly leaked

Images of what might be Dell's upcoming 10.1-inch Windows 7-powered “Peju” tablet were published by Engadget on Thursday. Allegedly, the device is packed with an HDMI port, a USB port and 2GB of RAM, although other specs are currently unknown. Rumor has it Dell would like to get the Peju on the market by the holidays in December, but it will cost you a pretty penny. Engadget‘s tipster said the tablet will be priced between $900 and $1,000, which is a far cry from the $200 Amazon Amazon Kindle Fire or even Apple's iPad 2. Plus, we've already had a taste of Windows 8 will offer on a tablet, so why settle for Windows 7? In any case, if you're on the market for a new tablet with a full-fledged Windows operating system, the Peju might suit your needs within a couple months.

Dell Streak 10 Pro tablet goes official, China first to have it

Odd but expected, Dell had skipped the US debut and jump straight over to China, announcing its first 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet in China. As usual, it's running the very-familiar 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 T20 chip, with 1GB of DDR2 RAM. The 10-inch LCD panel has 1280 x 800 resolution and is protected by the mighty gorilla, much like its smaller brother the 5-inch Streak. There's also the 5 megapixel camera and 2 megapixel camera back and front, and regular-size SDHC expansion. That said, Chinese buyers can grab this 16GB WiFi tablet plus 2GB of cloud storage for just ¥2,999 ($465) a pop — a slightly more attractive price compared to its competitors.

Dell Streak 10 Pro poses next to the Streak 7 and Streak 5

Dell's third Android tablet, the Streak 10 Pro, has finally appeared in a live photo – not alone, but standing next to the older 7-inch and 5-inch Streaks, this allowing us to see just how big the new tablet is.

Interestingly, the photo shows Android Honeycomb running not only on the Streak 10 Pro, but also on the Streak 7, which may mean an official update will come to the latter tablet (launched with Android 2.2 Froyo back in March).

As previously rumored, the Dell Streak 10 Pro should be released in China starting this week, although we're still short on details regarding its price. The big Honeycomb Streak offers a 10.1 inch display with 1280 x 800 pixels, GPS, Wi-Fi, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM, and a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

At the moment, Dell doesn't know if it's going to offer the Streak 10 Pro in occidental markets or not. It will wait and see how sales in China go, and only then decide.

10-Inch Dell Streak Pro Pictured Next to its Smaller Siblings

Dell has been working their way up the ruler over the past year or two, releasing the 5-inch Dell Streak followed by a 7-inch version of the tablet. But with the Dell Streak Pro, the manufacturer is finally playing with the big boys. The 10-inch tablet has been pictured sitting pretty next to its smaller counterparts, flexing its Honeycomb muscle in all its glory. The Streak Pro marks Dell’s first Android 3.0 slate and also sports a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and dual cameras. The 10.1-inch screen has a resolution of 1280×800.

The Streak Pro is said to be headed to China this week, though no mention has been made of a release in other markets.
